The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been gradually deregulating which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in other states.
The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote more competition the energy market was split into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
Distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.
South Australia 's energy market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This meant that consumers could now change to another provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.
There is only one main electricity distributor in SA
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia - Note, in some remote areas of SA, electricity is supplied by other companies.
Tips for reducing electricity consumption to save on your bills
Here are a few easy to implement ways for reducing your expenditure on electricity
- Turn all appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
- Use the clothes dryer less frequently. Hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Wear warm clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, beanie, booties, jumper).
- Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Reduce the use of lights by making use of the available natural light.
- Close the doors of rooms that aren't in use, so you only cool or heat a smaller space.
- Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the house cool down, and shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
- Prevent the sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
