Electricity and Gas Comparison in these States

Our electricity comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated electricity market. Each energy provider is only able to sell energy in some regions, therefore the number of electricity providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, you can only purchase energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you'd like to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply the electricity to your premises after you switch over to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from the distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the final switchover won't go ahead until your present provider has sent you your final bill, and they can't do that until they've taken a final meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll also inform your present provider that you're leaving them. The change to your new provider will not happen straight away, because your current provider has to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save money

Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce your expenditure on electricity

  • Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (jumper, booties, warm socks, beanie).
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening windows at night to allow the cooler air in, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
