Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. States have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The market in South Australia was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This enabled customers to change to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in South Australia is supplied by one main distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a few remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Tips for reducing electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easy to implement tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Use your clothes dryer less. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Dress for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
  • Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Reduce your use of lights by using natural light where possible. Turn lights off when there's no on in the room.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house even after you change to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. However, the final switchover cannot go ahead until after your current provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll also notify your present provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual switch to the new provider won't happen straight away, though, because your current provider needs to read your meter again, one final time. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
